A story from the Associated Press reports a new Maine Democrat’s bill could prohibit pet shops from selling dogs and cats in the state.

Democratic Sen. Ben Chipman’s bill, if passed, would fine pet shop owners up to $500 per violation, and even license suspensions or revocations.

The Legislature’s agriculture, conservation and forestry committee will review the bill Thursday, the article reports.

The goal is to help more cats and dogs in Maine that are in shelters awaiting adoption, however the Maine Veterinary Medical Association reportedly did not take a position either way on the bill, according to the AP, but added that it’s easier to regulate businesses than individual breeders.

The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council said in the article that only breeders provide puppies to Maine stores. Some Maine pet shops actually work with shelters to adopt the cuddly little pets.
