What Was Trying To Get Into My Trash Can?

After being away on vacation for 5 days, when we arrived back home I noticed something very strange about my trash can.

The trash can sits out on the deck of our second floor apartment. Something wanted to get into it badly. It appears that the lid had been chewed up with chunks of it sitting on the deck and holes all through it.

The strangest part is that I took the trash out just after we left so it was empty.

What in the world could have gotten up on the second floor deck trying to get into this? Any ideas?
